![]() Even in this gaming video you can see some effects used in most montage videos. An example is below showing the cuts between each sequence and the action packed scenes keeping it upbeat and missing out the story in the middle. Also now since the massive development of gaming technology and online play more and more people have gaming as a significant part of there lives and now there are people making a living from making gaming videos, and the most popular are gaming montages. ![]() It is used now in almost every music video keeping them upbeat and telling a story much quicker and keeping the audience interested. You can see the dramatic development and change from the start of montage to modern montage as it is now widely used and excepted. A training sequence and someones journey from start to finish. This is the introduction scene in the famous “HOT FUZZ” this is one of my favorite films and it is a great example of montage editing, it also shares similarities with classic montage scenes like in “ROCKY”. They also use a very good establishing shot that isn’t to disorienting for the viewer. In this scene you can see several different editing and filming techniques and how they use simple physical action for the scenes continuity. This is an example of continuity editing. montage started to be used most in dance and music videos. The next step up from the 1930’s to the 1950’s was to combine numerous short shots with fades dissolves and other effects with the montage sequences. This is a clip from one of Sergei Eisenstein’s films called “October” And you can see how montage started out and how it was appose to how it is now. Here is an example of deliberate discontinuity in modern film that works very well, seen here in the “Lord of the Rings” when a creature is talking to himself but by deliberately breaking the 180 degree rule it looks like he is talking to a completely different person. If the camera passes over the axis, it is called jumping the line or crossing the line. this went completely against the classical Hollywood continuity system, he wanted to draw attention to the changes between shots and make them obvious and less fluid. An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters and by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene, the first character will always be frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first. ![]() And violations of the 180 degree rule”In film making, the 180-degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene. He also had a theory of his own, his idea was that the style of editing offered discontinuity in graphics and qualities. However they did disagree on how exactly to view montage However Eisenstein’s view of montage was that “montage is an idea that arises from the collision of independent shots”. The Soviets had a Montage theory,They believed it was an approach to understanding and creating cinema that relies heavily upon editing (Montage if french for assembly or Editing). A montage sequence is usually used to suggest the length or passage of time. ![]() If you don’t know Montage editing, in short is when a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense/shorten time and the information. Sergei died 23rd of July 1948 he was aged 50. At the time he was a pioneering soviet Russian film director and film theorist, and he was well known for several films he participated in throughout his life time such as Ivan the Terrible. However Sergei was often Considered to be “The Father of Montage”. The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth over discontinuity in the editing process this was more a less the only way until the 1920’s when montage was introduced by Sergei Eisenstein and early Soviet Directors. Continuity editing is the dominant style of video and film editing.
